I. Love. Applesauce. So of course the first thing I did after I went apple picking was go home and make applesauce! It’s so ridiculously easy to make too.
You can eat it for breakfast, snack, dessert…heck eat it for lunch or dinner too if you want.
For my birthday in September, I decided I wanted to go apple picking. The only variety they had that day since it was early in the season was Jonamacs. I’ve never had them before, but they’re supposed to be good for baking.
They sure made a really yummy applesauce.
First things first, you have to peel, core and chop all your apples. I recommend chopping the apple right down the middle into quarters and then slicing off the little bit of core on the edge. You save more apple that way instead of just cutting around the center.
You’re going to need 3lbs of apples. It makes quite a bit of applesauce, perfect for a family or if you want leftovers. Three pounds is equivalent to about 6 medium sized apples. If you want accuracy, you can weigh your apples on a scale.
I ended up using I think around 10 or 12 because mine were small.
Boil and Mash
The only other ingredients in the applesauce are sugar, water and cinnamon. You don’t have to add cinnamon if you don’t want to. You can also modify the amount of sugar if you like.
All you have to do is put the apples, water, sugar and cinnamon into a large pot and bring it to a boil. Then cover it and let it simmer for a bit. After the cook time, I mash it with a potato masher and that’s it!
At this point, if you want smooth applesauce, you can always put in the blender.
One of my favorite things is to eat the applesauce hot with a scoop of whipped cream. I love using the So Delicious Coco Whip.
I like eating it cold too and dipping cinnamon graham crackers in it.
Homemade Chunky Applesauce
- 3 lbs (About 6-8) Apples, peeled, cored, and chopped
- ⅔ Cup Granulated Sugar
- 1 Tsp Cinnamon
- 1 Cup Water
- Prepare apples. Place apples in a large pot with the cinnamon, water and sugar. Mix it all together. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low and let simmer, covered, for about 20 minutes.
- Put a fork through an apple piece to see if it's soft. Then mash with a potato masher into the desired consistency. You can blitz it in the blender if you want it completely smooth. Serve hot or cold.
